You want to plant and harvest fresh herbs and vegetables this year, but your yard — for various reasons — isn’t the place for a garden, you can do great things with containers. Maybe only  your patio, deck, or driveway gets enough sun, or what was your garden has been displaced by your kids’ soccer goal or has become second base, or you just don’t have the time to weed and maintain a large patch. Whatever the reason, we’ve found some useful products that let us have a tiny farm.

There’s nothing better-tasting than your own tomatoes. And you don’t need a lot of room. This planter box is made from reclaimed cedar, so it won’t leach any chemicals into your plants (some plastic and metal planters can). If you’ve got limited sun, it rolls so you can keep it out of the shadows. It’s deep enough for large plants.

You can’t have a BLT without the lettuce! Try this standing garden for shallow-rooting plants like lettuces, greens, and herbs. The elevation keeps it out of reach of rabbits, and you don’t have to kneel or bend to harvest your plants.

If you’ve only got a small space, go up! This vertical garden planter gives you 16 square feet of gardening space, while it only takes up three square feet of your patio or deck.

If you’ve got a fence, railing, or post, create your own garden design with these ingenious clips for flower pots. Grow herbs, lettuces, or flowers.

Even a tabletop or window box can provide fresh herbs this season — and if you bring them inside, you can have them year-round. They’re easy to buy in any garden center or big-box store, but finding them in bright colors or with modern simplicity can be harder. That’s why these colorful, minimal planters caught our eyes — especially this green one. We’re partial to this shade.

If these ideas have sparked your imagination about what your outside space can be, take a look at some of the pool areasdecks, and patios we’ve transformed for our clients. What do you want to do? Let us know — we’re happy to help!
